The tree panel can be found to the right of the main screen (see 'main screen layout') and presents a structured representation of the background or phases you are viewing. It changes depending on whether it is the phases, or the background that you are working with, and each item in the view is represented by an icon, a label and a position, as explained below.
The layout is descriped as a 'tree' layout because, working from the upper left, each successive item has 'branches' below it and indented to it's right. The branches of an item can be hidden or 'collapsed', in which case the item will have a '+' symbol to its left. Clicking on the '+' 'expands' the branches of that item.
In BattleMaps, there are two trees. The normal one has 'Phases' as it's root.

Under that are listed the phases of this BattleMap, in order and within each phase are listed the objects contained on that phase, in the order that they will be drawn. This matters for objects in cases where two objects overlap. The object later in the list will be drawn later, i.e. on top of the earlier one. You can change this ordering (see 'Actions' below).
The other tree is presented when you are editing the background (see 'Adding objects to the background').

As with a phase, it lists the objects added to the background, again in the order they will be drawn.
Each item in the tree panel has an icon to represent it's item type and a label to identify it. The different icons are listed below, the labels are either the full unit name (for military units), the label (for labelled other types of object), the object type (for unlabelled other objects), or the contour height (for contours).
| The root for the phases | |
| The root for the background objects | |
| an individual phase | |
| a military unit | |
| an arrow, straight or curved | |
| a contour line | |
| other types of object (e.g rectangles, polygons, freehand objects etc.) |
You can perform various actions while in the tree panel using the mouse as detailed below :
