This section deals with probably the most important part of BattleMaps - adding the military units to the phases. The military units are held in a 'shape library' which can be added to over time. Keep checking back at www.battle-maps.com for updated shape libraries.
Note, however, that until you create a phase you will not be able to add any military units. They cannot be added to the background.
Open the shape library by selecting 'Objects' from the menu, then selecting 'Add a military object' as shown below.

You should then be presented with the shape library which will look something like this :

The shapes are grouped in categories and to expand a category to see the shapes contained, click on the '+' sign to the category's left. Once you select a shape, you will see a preview of it in the preview area. You should also select the side that this unit will belong to from the list in the top right. This also updates the preview to show what colour the unit will be.
In the description area it give a description of the unit being added.
When you are ready to add the unit, click 'Add' in the bottom right. Clicking 'Cancel' returns you to the main screen without adding a unit.
The shape list will allow you to choose more than one shape at a time. You can do this by clicking one shape, then holding the 'control' key on the keyboard (often marked 'Ctrl') pressed while you select another shape. Both will then be highlighted.
If you select more than one shape, they will be combined together and the resulting shape shown in the preview area. You might want to do this, for example, to combine the 'Regiment' symbol with the 'Infantry' symbol to produce and 'Infantry Regiment' symbol as shown below:

Note that the order you select the shapes is important. The first one you select is drawn first. The next is drawn second, i.e. over the top of the first. If you want an opaque background to the unit symbol, try selecting 'background' first, then a 'unit type symbol', then a 'unit formation symbol' to build it up.
Once you are satisfied, click 'add' to build the final unit shape. You will then be presented with the 'Military unit details' window (see 'Changing military objects' for more information). Here you can confirm the title, label(s), appearance and information on this unit before placing it on the map.
Once you confirm these details (by clicking 'OK') you are returned to the main map screen. As you move the mouse pointer over the map you will find that the new miltary object appears 'stuck' to the mouse pointer. To place it on the map, move it to where you want it to be and click the left mouse button once. The unit is now placed and a grey 'selection frame' should appear around it. You can then use this selection frame to adjust its size and orientation (see 'Moving, rotating and re-sizing objects' for more details).
You can then add further units in the same way or if you have several similar units to add, simply duplicate the first and change the details of the others as the window appears. For details, see 'Changing, duplicating and removing objects'.
