The map legend

This section shows you how to change the settings for the map legend. You can choose how it looks and how big the scale marker should be.

The legend shows the scale of the map, the orientation of north and a key for the colours of the opposing sides (see 'creating an Order of Battle').

You can also add other items such as military unit symbols to the legend (see 'Adding additional legend items').

The window to enter these details can be reached by selecting 'Map & background' from the main menu.

then select 'Change legend settings' from the menu which appears.

You should then be presented with the following window, the sections of which follow in more detail :

Choosing how the legend looks.

In the upper, 'visibility' section the first thing to choose is whether you want to display the legend or not. Selecting 'no' hides it from the map.

Next you can choose whether the legend should be transparent or not. Setting it transparent will show the section of the map behind the legend through it. If you choose 'no', it will appear as a solid panel on top of the map. You can then choose the colour of the background for the legend panel by clicking on the 'choose a colour' button.

You can also choose to have a black line, or border around the legend and, if so, whether it should have squared-off or rounded corners. Which you choose depends on how you want the final map to look.

The final part of this section asks where you would like the legend to be displayed. Currently the choice is from the four corners of the map. Choose the corner that best suits the layout of the final map. To do this, click on the button to the right of the position to 'drop-down' the possible choices, then click on the one you require.

Choosing the size and layout of the scale

The lower section of this window deals with the displayed map scale. You can choose how wide you would like it to be and the distance between intermediate distance marks. For example, the picture below shows a distance of 5 miles on the scale with an intermediate mark every mile.

Where as the following examples show distances of 2 kilometers with marks every half a kilometer, and 100 nautical miles marked with 20 nm intervals respectively.

Closing the window

Clicking 'OK' will save these details, clicking 'cancel' returns the details to the state they were in before opening this window.
